Breast milk is best for your baby

Breast milk is best for babies. The World Health Organisation (WHO) and Health Promotion Board (HPB) recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life. Unnecessary introduction of bottle feeding or other food and drinks will have a negative impact on breastfeeding. At around six months of age (but not before 4 months), infants should receive nutritionally adequate and age-appropriate complementary foods while breastfeeding continues for up to two years of age or beyond. Consult your doctor before deciding to use infant formula or if you have difficulty breastfeeding.

Abbott Singapore fully recognises breast milk’s primacy, value and superiority and supports exclusive breastfeeding as recommended by the WHO.

The HPB recommends that infants start on age-appropriate complementary foods at around 6 months, whilst continuing breastfeeding for up to 2 years or beyond to meet their evolving nutritional requirements. If no longer breastfeeding, toddlers can switch to full cream milk after 12 months. This should be complemented by a good variety of solid foods from the four main food groups (fruits, vegetables, grains, meat and alternatives). From the minute you heard your baby’s heartbeat to the moment he took his first breath, you knew you wanted to protect him the best you can at every stage of his life. And you would do everything you can to ensure that he has everything he needs to grow up strong and healthy. Naturally, you’ll be looking for a milk formula that does the same.

As we know, babies’ digestive systems are developing and may find it difficult to break down full-sized protein like adults can. That’s why they may be more susceptible to digestion issues such as gassiness, fussiness (crying), spitting up, constipation, colic and eczema. It’s important to find the ideal formula that is easy-to-digest and supports your baby’s total development, especially in his rapidly developing body and brain.

Worrying about your baby having tummy troubles? Consider a milk formula that is specially made with 100% partially hydrolysed whey protein and is lactose-free. A partially hydrolysed whey formula with smaller proteins is easier for your baby to digest, and so is gentler on your baby’s tummy. It may also be hypoallergenic for babies at risk of developing eczema. Lactose-free formula is suitable for babies who are experiencing abdominal pain, diarrhoea, spit-up, gas and cramp due to lactose intolerance.

Did you know that 70% of your baby’s immune system exists in the gut? That’s why it’s vital to protect both his gut and immune system with a milk formula that supports both. Look out for a formula with 2’-FL and nucleotides that support your baby’s natural body defences. Learn more about 2’-FL here.

Approximately 75% of your baby’s brain growth takes place in the first year. His vision starts off blurry, but by the sixth month, he’ll see the world as you do. His immune system, not yet fully developed at birth, continues to strengthen as well. Proper nutrition supports all of these advancements. Besides choosing a milk formula that has 2’-FL and nucleotides, make sure it also contains nutrients such as Natural Vitamin E, Lutein; and DHA that supports your baby’s brain and eye development.
