Breast milk is best for your baby

Breast milk is best for babies. The World Health Organisation (WHO) and Health Promotion Board (HPB) recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life. Unnecessary introduction of bottle feeding or other food and drinks will have a negative impact on breastfeeding. At around six months of age (but not before 4 months), infants should receive nutritionally adequate and age-appropriate complementary foods while breastfeeding continues for up to two years of age or beyond. Consult your doctor before deciding to use infant formula or if you have difficulty breastfeeding.

Abbott Singapore fully recognises breast milk’s primacy, value and superiority and supports exclusive breastfeeding as recommended by the WHO.

The content on this website is intended as general information for Singaporean residents only and should not be used as a substitute for medical care and advice from your healthcare practitioner. The HPB recommends that infants start on age-appropriate complementary foods at around 6 months, whilst continuing breastfeeding for up to 2 years or beyond to meet their evolving nutritional requirements. If no longer breastfeeding, toddlers can switch to full cream milk after 12 months. This should be complemented by a good variety of solid foods from the four main food groups (fruits, vegetables, grains, meat and alternatives). THE SCIENCE

Formula Feeding Intolerance Is Common

Gas, fussiness, spit-up, constipation, eczema and colic are very common formula feeding problems among young children. Marketing research suggests that two out of every three children experience these types of common feeding problems.1 Intolerance symptoms such as fussiness, gas, spit-up may be due to lactose sensitivity and eczema may be due to cow milk protein sensitivity.2 These symptoms can be a source of frustration for both baby and you. The word that is used to refer to these common issues with baby's digestive system is "intolerance".

The Quest for the Best

Follow-on formulas are carefully designed for the nutritional needs of a baby after 6 months, but since your baby’s digestive system is still growing and maturing, it may mean that baby is not able to digest certain nutrients well.

Some ingredients in a formula - for example, lactose, the type of protein, or the fat blend may be difficult for your baby to tolerate. Common feeding problems due to formulas may be addressed by choosing formulas with:

  • Reduced lactose
  • Altered protein form & size
  • Modified fat source

The Breakthrough Approach to Milk Formula

Reduced lactose

Lactose sensitivity can cause abdominal pains, spit-ups, gas and cramps. This happens when the bacteria in baby’s large intestine ferments non-digested lactose to produce gas and other compounds. This can cause bloating and watery stools. Switching to a low lactose formula can be an easy first step to help manage a child’s tolerance issues.

Altered protein form & size

During digestion, proteins are hydrolysed into di- and tripeptides and amino acids that are absorbed into the small intestine.3 Some formulas have their protein source partly broken down (partially hydrolysed) to support easy digestion by babies. Sometimes children with cow milk protein sensitivities may develop eczema - a skin rash characterized by itchy, red, or scaly patches.

digestion

Ministry of Health Guidelines recommend hypoallergenic^ formula for babies with a family history of allergy who cannot be completely breastfed.4

Modified fat source

The fat blend or source used in the milk formulas may affect your child’s stool consistency and frequency. Some formulas prepared with a predominantly palm olein oil blend could result in harder stools that may be more difficult to pass.5,6

Adding Prebiotics

Prebiotics like GOS have been shown to promote the growth of ‘good’ bacteria in the gut that help suppress the growth of harmful bacteria and maintain a healthy digestive system.
