Breast milk is best for your baby

The World Health Organisation recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life. Unnecessary introduction of bottle feeding or other food and drinks will have a negative impact on breastfeeding. After six months of age, infants should receive age appropriate foods while breastfeeding continues for up to two years of age or beyond. Consult your doctor before deciding to use infant formula or if you have difficulty breastfeeding.

COW MILK ALLERGY

WHAT IS COW MILK ALLERGY?

Cow milk allergy (CMA) is the 2nd most common food allergy in young Asian children1 CMA occurs when a child’s immune system reacts to one or two milk proteins namely, casein or whey. This is because the immune system mistakenly tries to protect the body from the food protein which then causes an allergic reaction.

What Are The Common Symptoms to CMA2?

You can use the symptom checklist to assess whether your child may have CMA.

If you think your child is reacting to cow’s milk, make an appointment to see your doctor to confirm or rule out CMA as a possible cause of your child’s condition. In rare cases, severe reactions may cause failure to thrive or be life-threatening.

Managing Your Child’s CMA2?

Once your child is diagnosed with CMA, your child’s physician may advice that cow milk formulas or any foods containing dairy proteins, including goat milk, should be avoided.

However, when you have to remove important foods like milk from your child's diet over a long period of time, important nutrients such as protein, calcium, vitamin D, vitamin A, vitamin B12, riboflavin and phosphorus that are essential for proper growth and development will be missing.

Impact of Nutrient Deficiencies
  • Low intake of calcium - may lead to small stature (height)5
  • Low intake of vitamin D - results in poor bone health (soft bones and fractures).6
  • Low intake of vitamin B2 (riboflavin) - may inhibit the release of energy from protein, fat and carbohydrate.7

In order for your milk-allergic child to obtain these nutrients, you must carefully choose food substitutes.

Ensuring a Balanced Diet for Your Child

Every parent knows a balanced diet is important for their child’s growth and development. Milk is an important source of energy, protein, vitamins and minerals for the growing child. If your child is allergic to cow’s milk, it is very important to replace it with a milk alternative that will provide the same nutrition.

Soy-Based Formulas - The Best Alternative to Cow’s Milk

Soy-based formulas have a long history of successful and safe use in the management of CMA, as a replacement for cow’s milk.

Soy Protein - What Every Parent Should Know

Soy provides a complete source of high quality dietary protein as it contains all the essential amino acids needed in a child’s daily diet.8

Soy formulas are safe and support normal growth of children like cow-milk based formulas.9

Select a soy-based formula that also contains important nutrients such as Lutein, DHA and AA for brain and eye development, Selenium, Zinc and Vitamins for protecting cells from free radicals and prebiotics for the gut health.

Live life well with CMA - Use a nutrient-dense and high-quality soy based formula as part of a healthy and well balanced diet to nourish your child.

GOODNESS OF SOY

Soy – A trusted source of healthy nutrition

The oldest account of soy as a beverage being made for consumption was in AD25-220 in China.1 Over time, interest in its nutritional value, and its use for feeding infants in China or those allergic to cow’s milk in the West grew.

A major growth of modern day interest in soy started in the early 1920s with the influence of three western researchers, namely Dr. William H. Adolph, a professor of chemistry at Shantung Christian University, Dr. A. A. Horvath, a Russian scientist working at the Peking Union Medical College (PUMC) and Dr. Harry W. Miller, a medical missionary working in Shanghai. In 1920 Dr. William H. Adolph published “The Nutritive Value of Soybean Products” in the National Medical Journal of China. This was the first published nutritional analysis of soy, which sparked much research subsequently.1

Today, soy is very popular globally including in the US and Europe and especially in Asian countries where consumption is the highest.2

Nutritional treasure with many health benefits

Soy is nature’s nutritional treasure, especially for individuals who cannot tolerate cow’s milk. It contains important nutrients similar to cow’s milk including protein, calcium, B vitamins, iron and zinc.

On the other hand, unlike cow’s milk, soy is very low in saturated fat and is cholesterol-free. Soy is an excellent and natural source of important nutrients which are essential for a growth and overall health.

Populations with diets high in soy protein and low in animal protein have been documented to have lower risks of prostate and breast cancers than other populations.3 Increasing dietary whole soy protein has also been shown to lower total cholesterol levels, low-density lipoproteins, and triglycerides.3 Animal studies have also shown that soy supplementation improves spatial memory.4

Complete source of dietary protein

It is well known that soy provides a complete source of high quality dietary protein. Unlike most plant proteins, soy contains all the essential amino acids needed in our diet.2 This is why it is commonly consumed by vegetarians as well as children and adults who cannot tolerate animal protein.

What is soy formula?

Soy formula is specially formulated milk which consists soy protein isolates, supplemented with the amino acid L-methionine. Soy formula is also enriched with essential nutrients to support a child's growth and development. It is not a form of soy drink which is found in supermarkets. In terms of nutrient profile, it is similar to a cow’s milk formula.
